What is AS 1692?
AS 1692-2006 (reconfirmed in 2016) is the Australian Standard for steel tanks for flammable and combustible liquids. It covers the design and construction of steel tanks for above-ground and underground use, including tanks with built-in secondary containment.
Why it matters for underground tanks
Underground fuel tanks sit out of sight for decades, so how they are built and protected against corrosion and leaks matters. Specifiers, site owners and installers often ask for tanks built to AS 1692. Our Glasteel II® underground tanks are manufactured to AS 1692 and UL 58, with an FRP outer layer for secondary containment and corrosion resistance.
Our underground tank specification
Download the Glasteel II technical specification (F-1001, PDF). It sets out the manufacturing standards the tanks are built to, including AS 1692 and UL 58.
What about fibreglass (FRP) tanks?
AS 1692 is written for steel tanks. Fibreglass underground fuel tanks are built to UL 1316, the standard for glass-fibre reinforced plastic underground tanks for petroleum products. Our FRP double wall tanks are manufactured to meet or exceed UL 1316.
Whatever the tank, the full underground petroleum storage system is designed, installed and operated to AS 4897, which calls for non-corroding tanks and pipework, secondary containment and overfill protection.
