Diesel storage tanks

Diesel storage tanks for farms, mine sites, fuel depots, fleet yards, defence bases and data centre generators. We build above-ground steel diesel tanks, from self-bunded tanks that need no bund to single-wall bulk diesel tanks of up to 150,000L, and double-wall underground diesel tanks in fibreglass or Glasteel® II. Every tank is made in Australia at our ISO 9001 sites in NSW and WA.

Which diesel tank do I need?

Start with your site: how much diesel you need on hand, whether the tank goes above or below ground, whether you already have a bund, and how close it sits to buildings and boundaries.

Diesel tank sizes

A diesel storage tank can be built at any capacity from 2,000L, so a 5,000L or 10,000L diesel tank for a farm or workshop is built the same way as bulk diesel storage for a mine or depot: up to 110,000L of diesel in one self-bunded tank, 150,000L in a single-wall tank in a bund, and 200,000L underground in Glasteel® II.

Bunded diesel tanks

Under AS 1940 a bunded diesel tank needs containment that generally holds at least 110% of the largest tank. You can get that two ways, and the choice mostly comes down to whether you already have a bund and whether the tank may move.

Self-bunded: the bund is built in

A self-bunded diesel tank is a tank inside a tank. The outer steel wall is the bund, so there is no concrete to pour, no rainwater collecting in an open bund, and the tank can be moved as the site changes. Every opening sits above the maximum liquid level, as AS 1940 Section 5.9 requires, so these tanks don’t gravity feed.

Single-wall: the tank sits in a concrete bund

A single-wall diesel tank sits in a concrete bund built on site. It suits fuel farms and sites with an existing bund, takes bottom outlets for flooded suction, and several tanks can share one bund. Rainwater that collects in the bund has to be caught and disposed of.

Diesel storage tanks made in NSW and WA

We build every diesel tank at our own ISO 9001 certified factories in Tomago NSW and Kwinana Beach WA, one on each side of the country, and deliver Australia-wide.

Built to order

There is no stock list to pick from. Each tank is built to the capacity, compartments and fittings your site needs. For a self-bunded tank, we send drawings with the dimensions and weight for your approval.

Freight in the quote

Every quote is priced with freight to your site, so the delivered cost is clear before you order, and we can coordinate the freight for you. A sales engineer covering your state replies within 2 business days.

Diesel storage and the standards

Above-ground diesel tanks

Under AS 1940, diesel is a Class C1 combustible liquid, not a flammable liquid like petrol, so the rules on bunding, location and separation are different. Our steel diesel tanks are built to AS 1940 and AS 1692, and self-bunded tanks carry their own bund. Read our plain-English AS 1940 guide, download our AS 1940 site checklist (PDF) to walk your site with, or see all above-ground fuel tanks.

Underground diesel tanks

Underground diesel tanks are double-wall, with the space between the walls monitored for leaks, and are installed by accredited installers. Fibreglass tanks are built to UL 1316. See what AS 1692 covers, or see all underground fuel tanks.

8 questions

1. What will you store?
2. Above or below ground?
3. What kind of site?
4. Do you already have a concrete bund?
5. Might the tank move to another site later?
6. Do separation distances to buildings or boundaries limit where the tank can go?
7. Several fuel grades from one tank?
8. Roughly how much in one tank?

Common questions

Can’t see yours? Call NSW +61 2 4964 8270 or WA +61 8 9434 1707.

No. Every diesel tank is built to order at our Tomago NSW or Kwinana Beach WA factory, to the capacity, compartments and fittings your site needs, and delivered Australia-wide. Ask for the current lead time when you request a quote.
A self-bunded tank holds from 2,000L to 200,000L, with up to 110,000L of diesel in each tank. Single-wall horizontal tanks run to 150,000L each and can be manifolded side by side for more. Underground, double-wall fibreglass tanks run from 2,000L to 150,000L and Glasteel® II tanks from 2,000L to 200,000L.
Under AS 1940, diesel is a Class C1 combustible liquid, because its flash point is above 60 °C and no higher than 93 °C. Combustible liquids are treated differently from flammable liquids such as petrol. Our plain-English AS 1940 guide explains what that means for bunding, location and separation.
A tank with containment that holds the diesel if the tank leaks. Bunded tanks either sit in a concrete or earth bund, which under AS 1940 generally needs to hold at least 110% of the largest tank, or carry their own steel bund as an outer wall, like our self-bunded tanks.
Not with a self-bunded tank. Its integral steel bund meets State and Territory requirements, so there is no concrete or earthen bund to build and no rainwater collecting in an open bund. Single-wall tanks sit in a simple concrete bund.
Each tank is priced for your site, because the capacity, compartments, fittings, fire rating and delivery distance all change the cost. Every quote includes freight to your site, and a sales engineer covering your state replies within 2 business days. Request a quote.
Overfill protection with a mechanical or electronic cut-off, an anti-siphon valve, an audible safe-fill alarm, a fire-rated ball valve, emergency venting where applicable, a ladder and platform, access manways, and fill, dip and vent sockets. Pumps, fuel management and automatic tank gauging are options. See the full list on the self-bunded tank page.
A self-bunded tank can, because its bund travels with it. A relocated tank needs recertifying to keep the warranty. A single-wall tank stays with its concrete bund.
Self-bunded steel tanks carry 10 years on structural integrity when operated free of water and adequately maintained, and 1 year on materials and workmanship. Underground double-wall FRP tanks carry a 30-year corrosion warranty.
Yes. A self-bunded steel diesel tank suits a farm: it sits above ground with no excavation, there is no bund to build, and it can be moved later. A 5,000L or 10,000L farm diesel tank is built to order like every other size, and the quote includes freight to your property.
Above-ground steel tanks suit mine sites, depots, generators and anywhere the tank may move later. Underground double-wall tanks suit service stations and fleet depots where the tank must sit under a driveway or out of the way. The guide above sets out which tank fits which site.
Yes. Double-wall FRP underground tanks come with 1 to 4 completely separate compartments, depending on size. Above ground, self-bunded and Flameshield® 2-hour tanks can be built with a compartment for each grade.
Yes. Double-wall FRP tanks are rated for biodiesel blends up to B20, and Glasteel® II tanks hold blended fuels including biodiesel. Tell us the blend when you ask for a quote.
Yes. We build self-bunded and fire-rated steel diesel tanks sized to a generator's runtime target. See data centre diesel storage.
