What it is

Glasteel® II is an FRP-clad steel tank, made under licence from the Steel Tank Institute. The steel inner wall carries the structural load; the FRP outer wall forms the secondary containment.

The FRP outer layer resists corrosion and removes the need for cathodic protection. A vacuum gauge on the interstitial space is fitted at the factory so the tank’s integrity can be monitored.

Typical applications

  • Service station forecourts
  • Fleet and transport depots
  • Defence and government fuel installations
  • Industrial sites storing fuels or chemicals underground

Why steel and fibreglass

Glasteel® II puts a welded steel tank, which carries the structural load, inside a leak-tight FRP outer wall that contains it and protects it from corrosion.

The strength of steel

The welded mild steel inner tank carries the load. It suits high-head filling where deep burial is required, and pumping in and out of the tank in generator applications.

Steel kept out of the ground

The FRP outer wall fully encloses the steel tank, including its fittings, so the steel never touches soil or groundwater and is isolated from acid or alkaline ground conditions.

No cathodic protection

The FRP outer wall resists corrosion, so the tank needs no cathodic protection.

Secondary containment

The steel tank sits completely inside the FRP outer wall, which forms the secondary containment if the inner wall ever leaks.

Vacuum leak monitoring

The interstitial space is put under vacuum at the factory and fitted with a vacuum gauge. A break in the inner or outer wall causes a loss of vacuum, so a regular check of the gauge confirms the tank’s integrity.

Fit-outs for forecourts

1,200 mm risers with 600NB manways and 5 × 100NB sockets for retail pressure systems, or 1,500 mm risers for large submersible turbines.

For fibreglass inside and out, see our double-wall FRP tanks, from 2,000L to 150,000L with Truchek® hydrostatic leak monitoring.

8 questions

1. Is the tank single-wall or double-wall?
2. Steel or fibreglass?
3. Is the space between the walls monitored for leaks? Double-wall tanks only. Skip this for a single-wall tank.
4. Is the site being rebuilt?
5. Do you want more capacity or different grades, AdBlue included?
6. Has the regulator or a site assessment called for replacement?
7. How many fuel grades or products does the tank need to hold?
8. Roughly how old is the tank? Recorded for the quote only. The result doesn't use it.

30 years against failure from external corrosion, cracking, break-up or collapse, and 30 years against failure from internal corrosion when the tank stores petrol, gasohol, jet fuel, diesel or methanol at ambient underground temperatures. Materials and workmanship are covered for 1 year. The warranty is valid once the installation checklist is returned within 30 days of installation. See the Glasteel® II warranty.
Both are double-wall with a monitored interstitial space. A double-wall FRP tank is fibreglass inside and out, from 2,000L to 150,000L, with Truchek® hydrostatic monitoring. Glasteel® II gives you a welded steel structural tank, fully enclosed in an FRP outer wall, from 2,000L to 200,000L.
