Diesel storage for standby generation

Our self-bunded above-ground steel tanks are manufactured to AS 1940 (the storage and handling of flammable and combustible liquids), with capacities from 2,000L to 200,000L to match your generator runtime target.

Tanks ship from ISO 9001 sites at Tomago NSW or Kwinana Beach WA, with compliance documentation supplied for your commissioning file. Compare every diesel fuel storage tank we make.

What we supply

  • Bulk generator diesel
  • Generator base tanks

Fuel storage for Uptime Institute Tier sites

The Uptime Institute Tier Standard: Topology sets the same on-site fuel minimum at every Tier, from Tier I to Tier IV. The site must hold enough fuel to run its engine generators for 12 hours at "N" load, the design load of the data centre.

Storing more than 12 hours is the owner's decision, based on the fuel supply risk at the site. We size tanks to the 12-hour minimum or to a longer runtime target. Send us the generator fuel burn at N load and the hours you need, and we will work out the volume and the number of tanks.

Uptime Institute
“The Tier Standard: Topology requires this 12-hour fuel storage minimum for all Tiers.”
Uptime Institute Journal, Fuel System Design and Reliability, 2014
“Exceeding the 12-hour minimum is an Operational Sustainability issue that requires careful analysis of the risks to the data center energy supply.”
Uptime Institute Journal, Fuel System Design and Reliability, 2014

Australian-made Fireguard® 4‑hour rated tanks or an imported tank

We build Fireguard® 4-hour rated tanks under licence from the Steel Tank Institute at our Tomago NSW and Kwinana Beach WA sites. If you’re comparing one with a tank brought in from overseas, the biggest difference is the warranty.

Don’t risk your critical infrastructure on a tank with no warranty

An importer can’t register a Fireguard® 4-hour rated tank, and without registration its warranty is void.

Hospitals, data centres, mines and defence sites depend on their fuel storage. An imported tank may be cheaper, but that’s because it comes without the warranty.

The warranty on a Fireguard® 4-hour rated tank is only valid once the owner completes the Warranty Validation Card and returns it to STI, within 30 days of installation or 90 days after we ship the tank, whichever comes first. Read the Fireguard® performance warranty (PDF).

The self-bunded tank in 3D

The double wall is the bund, so there is no concrete bund to build on site, and the tank can be moved later.

Built to AS 1940 and AS 1692, in capacities from 2,000L to 200,000L, with up to 110,000L of diesel in each tank.

Which diesel tank do I need?

Start with your runtime target and your site. How close the tank sits to the building and how much ground you have will usually decide it.

How much diesel do your generators need?

Diesel your standby generators need for a runtime target at N load, and the tanks that hold it. Open the full calculator

Your generators

Count the generators running to carry the site load. Redundant units on standby (the +1 of N+1) don't burn fuel at N load.
From the generator datasheet's fuel consumption table, at the load each set will run at.
The Uptime Institute minimum is 12 hours at N load for every Tier. Many owners store more.
Fuel below the outlet that can't be drawn, plus the space left empty at the top. Leave blank to see usable fuel only.

Yes. A self-bunded tank can be moved to any practical location. If it’s relocated, it needs recertifying to keep the warranty.
