Hydrogen sulphide in a wet well turns to sulphuric acid on every exposed surface. In a concrete station that acid reaches the reinforcing steel, and the station needs repair long before its design life is up.
A Mullaly station is laminated in one piece from premium-grade vinyl ester resin and glass. Both the liquid-side and vapour-side surfaces resist corrosion, so there is no coating to apply on site, no joints to seal and nothing to reline later.
Vinyl ester resists the aggressive gases in enclosed wastewater environments. No sealing or coating of surfaces or fittings.
A homogeneous sealed unit with watertight inlet and outlet connections. No precast joints to crack or leak.
Pedestals, guide rails and all internal pipework are pre-fitted to your approved drawings before the station leaves our site.
The integral valve chamber sits inside the same shell, so there is less to dig, less shoring and less disruption on site.
Light enough to lift and place. Most stations are set and backfilled within 1–2 days, and some go in within a few hours.
Valves sit in their own chamber, clear of the wet well, which cuts confined-space entry for routine servicing.
Every station is engineered to its site. This is the most common configuration: one FRP shell with the valve chamber built in above the wet well.
Standard diameters and depths below. Larger stations are engineered to suit the project.
Wet well and valve chamber in one shell. The smallest footprint and the fastest install.
A stand-alone chamber for submersible pumps. Suits larger stations or a separate valve pit.
Protects pipes and valves from corrosion and vandalism. Pairs with a wet well where freight limits apply.
Combine several inflows or change a gravity line’s direction or grade. Smooth channels stop solids building up.
FRP tanks that hold inflow during a power failure or pump outage.
Macerator chambers break down solids before pumping. Lift stations are made to project requirements.

How a one-piece Mullaly station compares with poured or precast concrete over the life of the asset.
| Criterion | Mullaly FRP | Concrete |
|---|---|---|
| Corrosion | Vinyl ester resists the corrosive chemicals in a sewage environment | Reinforcing steel corrodes under H2S attack and the sulphuric acid it produces |
| Watertightness | One homogeneous sealed unit | Potential leaks through cracks and joins between precast segments |
| Design life | 100 years, with a 30-year warranty backed by a 30-year track record | Can be designed for 100 years but often needs early repair or refurbishment |
| Install time | A few hours on some projects; typically 1–2 days | Typically weeks for an in situ concrete station, for example over six weeks on Sino Iron |
| Handling | Lightweight, with lower lifting risk and smaller cranes | Heavy lifts raise safety risk and make installation harder |
| Package | Delivered as one complete unit, often a combo with integral valve pit; no assembly on site | Sections joined on site, or poured in situ and fitted out in a confined space |
| Safety | No fit-out on site, so little need for confined-space entry | Long assembly and heavy handling; fit-out often in confined spaces |
| Ground movement | Engineered for maximum strength; allows for ground movement with no structural fatigue | Ground movement can crack sections and break seals between them |
| Maintenance | Smooth internal walls stay cleaner for longer | Rough walls need more frequent cleaning, unless lined |
| Remote sites | Installed in some of the most remote locations in Australia | Concrete supply is often unavailable, and heavy precast units are costly to freight |
| Quality control | Factory-controlled conditions, to an independent design by a registered practising composite engineer | Placement quality varies with the experience of the crew |

The station is designed and certified by a composite materials engineer, and drawings come back for your approval.
Laminated in one piece at Tomago or Kwinana Beach, with pedestals, rails and pipework fitted in the factory.
By road to any site in Australia, including remote communities more than 3,000 km from our plant.
Lift, place and backfill, then connect the external pipework and electrics. Usually 1–2 days.

Hundreds of Mullaly stations are in service, with no known structural failures in more than 30 years.
Sydney Airport needed a sewage station that could sit under an Airbus A380 parked overhead, installed with as little construction traffic on an active airfield as possible. Mullaly combined the wet well, macerator and valve pit in one FRP unit and delivered the whole system on three semi-trailers. It was lifted, placed and backfilled.
A 3 m × 6.2 m deep pre-fitted combo station and 110kPa FRP emergency storage tanks, installed quickly on a crowded site so the stadium opened for the 2020 NRL season. Built by Watpac for the Queensland Government.
A fibreglass (FRP) pump station supplied in 2010 for a remote island site.
Two pre-fitted 3 m × 5 m deep combos for a mining village housing 4,000 workers, 100 km south-west of Karratha. Crane time and site labour were cut, and installation took under a week.
A 4.0 m × 8.5 m deep wet well with a dividing wall forming two pump chambers, in sandy ground next to a creek. The FRP shell reduced shoring, dewatering time and excavation depth.
Installed fully assembled 560 km east of Darwin, where labour is hard to get to site. Twenty years on, the station’s smooth internal surfaces and stainless fittings were still in near-perfect condition.
A Ø3.0 m × 5.0 m deep combo with twin Homa pumps, on reclaimed swamp land beside the Cooks River. Under an hour from being craned into the hole to backfilling.
“I would have no hesitation in recommending a Mullaly fibreglass pump station. We have been installing these for over 15 years and have found the ease of installation, combined with the reduced safety risks and excavation works required, make these units an overall cost-effective solution and great value for our clients.”
