Tank Solutions – Fuel

Self-bunded tanks for diesel and fuel

Self-bunded tanks are double-wall steel bunded tanks with the bund built in, made to AS 1940 and AS 1692 at our ISO 9001 factories in Tomago NSW and Kwinana Beach WA. A self-bunded diesel tank needs no concrete bund, collects no rainwater to dispose of, and can be relocated as your site changes. Need a bigger or underground tank? Benefits

The double wall is the bund. That minimises civil works on site, and because the tank is self-contained it can be moved as the site changes, which a fuel storage tank in a concrete bund can’t.

No civil bund

The integral wrap-style steel bund replaces earthen or concrete bunds.

No rainwater to dispose of

Nothing collects in an open bund, so there’s no contaminated water to catch and treat.

Relocatable

Self-contained, so the tank can be moved to any practical location as the site changes.

Built for pumping rates

The cylindrical shell with dished and flanged ends is designed for high pumping rates and resists transport damage.

Overfill protection standard

Cut-off, anti-siphon valve and audible safe-fill alarm on every tank.

Made to AS 1940 and AS 1692

Manufactured to meet or exceed industry and statutory requirements.

What it stores

  • Diesel and other Class 3 PG III, C1 and C2 liquids, up to 110,000L

What is a self-bunded fuel tank?

A self-bunded tank is a tank inside a tank. The inner steel tank holds the fuel, and a second steel wall wrapped around it is the bund. If the inner tank leaks, the outer wall contains the fuel. Other bunded fuel tanks sit inside a concrete or earth bund built on site; because the containment is part of a self-bunded tank, you don’t build one around it.

Self-bunded diesel tanks and petrol tanks

The same double-wall tank stores diesel or petrol. What changes is how much one tank may hold, because AS 1940 treats flammable petrol more strictly than combustible diesel.

Self-bunded diesel tanks

Diesel is a Class C1 combustible liquid under AS 1940. Approvals allow up to 110,000L of Class 3 PG III, C1 and C2 liquids in one self-bunded diesel storage tank.

Typical sites
  • Standby generators and genset day tanks, including data centres
  • Mines and remote camps
  • Transport and fleet depots
  • Construction and temporary sites

Self-bunded petrol tanks

Petrol (motor spirit) is a Class 3 PG II flammable liquid. Approvals allow up to 55,000L of it in one tank.

  • Flammable liquids need larger separation distances than diesel. Check them for your site against AS 1940 or with your consultant.
  • Where space is tight, a Fireguard® 4-hour fire-rated tank can cut separation distances by as much as 50%.
  • One tank can hold diesel and petrol in separate compartments, configured to suit your site.

The tanks also store jet fuel, Avgas, kerosene, motor oil and many petrochemical and chemical liquids. Tell us what you’re storing and we’ll confirm the tank suits it. For corrosive chemicals such as acids, caustic soda and hypochlorite, see our FRP self-bunded chemical tanks.

Self-bunded tank sizes: 2,000L to 200,000L

Every tank is built to order at the capacity, shape and compartments your site needs. Tell us the volume and fuel, and we’ll send drawings with the dimensions and weight for your approval.

Built to AS 1940 and AS 1692

Two Australian Standards decide whether an above-ground fuel storage tank passes. Our self-bunded tanks are manufactured to exceed AS 1692, in accordance with AS 1940.

AS 1940: how the fuel is stored

AS 1940 is the standard for storing and handling flammable and combustible liquids, and it is what your site is usually assessed against.

  • Spill containment. Since the 2017 edition a bund generally needs to hold at least 110% of the largest tank. On a self-bunded tank the outer steel wall is that containment.
  • Openings above the liquid level. Every opening sits above the maximum liquid level, as Section 5.9 requires, so a broken fitting can’t drain the tank.
  • Overfill protection and venting. Cut-off, anti-siphon valve, audible safe-fill alarm and emergency venting where applicable come fitted.
  • Location and separation. Distances to buildings and boundaries depend on the fuel class and the quantity stored, so they are set for each site.

Read our plain-English AS 1940 guide, or download our AS 1940 site checklist (PDF) to walk your site with.

AS 1692: how the tank is built

AS 1692 is the standard for steel tanks for flammable and combustible liquids. It covers design and construction, including tanks with built-in secondary containment.

AS 1692Manufactured to exceed AS 1692; barrel wall thickness to Australian Standards. See what AS 1692 covers

7 questions

1. What do you store?
2. What tank do you have?
3. If it sits in a bund, does the bund hold at least 110% of the largest tank? Skip this if your tank is self-bunded or has no bund.
4. Has a consultant or regulator assessed the separation distances to buildings, boundaries and ignition sources?
5. Is the tank built to a recognised design standard, such as AS 1692?
6. Is overfill protection fitted?
7. Have you checked with your council, state dangerous goods regulator and insurer?

A tank inside a tank. The inner steel tank holds the fuel and a second steel wall around it acts as the bund, so a leak from the inner tank is contained without a separate concrete or earth bund.
No. The integral wrap-style steel bund meets State and Territory regulatory requirements, so there are no earthen or concrete bunds to build and no rainwater collecting in an open bund.
From 2,000L to 200,000L, cylindrical or rectangular. Each tank is built to order at the capacity your site needs, within the per-tank limits of 110,000L for diesel and 55,000L for petrol.
Approvals allow up to 110,000L of Class 3 PG III, C1 and C2 liquids such as diesel, and up to 55,000L of Class 3 PG II and PG III liquids such as petrol.
Yes, in sizes up to 55,000L. Petrol is a flammable liquid, so it needs larger separation distances than diesel under AS 1940. A Fireguard® 4-hour fire-rated tank can cut those distances by as much as 50%.
Yes. Multiple compartments are available, configured to suit what your site needs.
They are manufactured to exceed AS 1692, the standard for steel tanks for flammable and combustible liquids, in accordance with AS 1940, the standard for storing and handling them.
No. Every tank is built to order to your capacity, compartments and fittings. Ask for the current lead time when you request a quote, and a sales engineer covering your state will reply within 2 business days.
We deliver Australia-wide and can coordinate all the freight requirements to your site. Every quote is priced with freight, so tell us about any site access restrictions in your enquiry.
No. All tank openings sit above the maximum liquid level, as AS 1940 Section 5.9 requires, so the tank can’t gravity feed or be manifold-balanced.
Yes. It can be moved to any practical location. If it’s relocated, it needs recertifying to keep the warranty.
Mechanical or electronic cut-off, an anti-siphon valve and an audible safe-fill alarm that warns the delivery driver, plus a fire-rated ball valve and emergency venting where applicable.
Keep water out. Water in diesel lets microbial growth (diesel bug) start, so check for water regularly and remove it through the tank’s drain point. Your fuel supplier can advise on testing. The structural warranty also requires the tank to be operated free of water.
10 years on structural integrity, provided the tank is operated free of water and adequately maintained, and 1 year on materials and workmanship.
Yes. Fireguard® tanks are rated to the SwRI 4-hour fire test and can reduce separation distances by as much as 50%.
