FRP ammonia storage tank for a metropolitan wastewater treatment plant

Ammonia storage tank for Perth’s northern suburbs WWTP.

Background

The Beenyup wastewater treatment plant serves Perth’s fast-growing northern suburbs. It is an advanced secondary treatment facility for domestic wastewater from the North Whitfords, Hamersley and Burns Beach schemes, designed to treat up to 135 million litres a day for about 660,000 people.

Australia’s first groundwater replenishment scheme sits on the Beenyup site.

The challenge

Ammonia is used in water and wastewater treatment to form chloramines for disinfection. Dry ammonia is relatively non-corrosive, but in the presence of moisture it becomes highly corrosive, so the material holding it matters for long-term safety.

The solution

GRP Tank Solutions built a 2.5 m diameter, 2.84 m straight-height FRP tank with a resin system selected to withstand ammonia. The tank was delivered and installed.

Products and scope
